February 12, 2008

This was Wolfgang's 24th trip to Antarctica and this time he noticed that something was very different. The effects of global warming brought more snow and less pack ice, leaving the wildlife scrambling to find firm, open ground.

DPA January Featured Classroom: ICEBOX Quality Framing & Gallery

The company moved out in the late 1980s, and its building has since evolved to become the heart of the heartland's art scene – a home to more than 130 artists and arts-related businesses, plus another 30 entrepreneurs and nonprofits...

DPA December Instructor Profile: Rick Wright

On Show at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography
Photos by Rick Wright, Philadelphia DPA Instructor

Loaded with intellectual whimsy, poetry and science, Rick Wright's Dada-esque photographs are hardly discernable as photographs. More reminiscent of drawings, Wright resourcefully pursues the extraordinary artfulness of the quotidian and often discarded, found object remnants of day to day. His work, somewhat obtuse, existential and strange, is laced with humor and contemplative complexity.

WORKING WITH ARTISTS: Photography School & Flash, A Working with Artists Space

It's a Colorado Rocky Mountain high – a photographic gallery / school / workshop and artistic agora surrounded by wild nature, in a planned community 10 minutes from downtown Denver.  The aptly named Working with Artists is the kind of gathering place you see in movies about funky, bohemian neighborhoods and charismatic, eccentric characters making art, where the streets are all cleaner and cooler than in real life.

DPA September Venue Feature: The Griffin Museum of Photography

September 06, 2007

The Griffin Museum of Photography takes its name, indirectly, from the mythical and majestic beast that blended the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle – the king of the beasts and the king of the birds. The griffin's job was to be "the guardian of the divine," and though the name of Winchester, Massachusetts' Griffin Museum is that of a human photographer, anyone who ventures inside this jewel box of light and shadow will appreciate, instinctively, this special setting for of the few things on Earth touched by divinity, and that is art.

DPA Philadelphia: YO!darkroom, by Frank Lovece

August 01, 2007

The word is as Philly as a cheesesteak or classic Gamble & Huff soul: "Yo!"  It's what fictional favorite son Rocky Balboa always said – and forget an etymology that goes back to military roll calls, or to Jack Kerouac's Sal Paradise saying of his On the Road beat friends, "We called each other 'Yo.'" The word defines Philadelphia as much as "fuhgeddaboutit" defines New York.

So what else to call the quintessential Philadelphia community photo gallery than YO!darkroom?
