On January 22, 2011, following last years highly successful workshop at Gradisca Ristorante, photographer John Bentham once again provided advanced DPA students with an opportunity to Shoot It and Eat It! While learning the tricks of a professional photographer and creating portfolio worthy photographs we all had a blast shooting on location.

This years restaurant was a quirky, popular newcomer - Sweet Revenge, Cupcake, Beer and Wine Bar. Garnering accolades and press appearances, including The Today Show, CNN, Top Chef, NY Magazine, Time Out NY and The Martha Stewart Show, Marlo Scott’s Sweet Revenge has received significant attention since opening in 2007.

The focus of the workshop was location lighting, environmental portraits and food photography with John providing insight on how to walk into a room and find the shot; how to position your subjects and light quickly and effectively. Students had the opportunity to use pro lighting equipment such as studio flash, radio slaves, grip, and light modifiers. We photographed staff prepping in the kitchen, still life food shots, location portraits and interiors, then we ate the food we shot, hence the name ... Shoot it and Eat It!

As a workshop bonus Sweet Revenge recently launched an apparel line and Marlo arranged for 3 striking models for us to photograph sporting the new SR hoodies, T-shirts and hats. Class wrapped up with a post-capture critique of student images. Sweet Revenge will be using the photos to update their website and promote the apparel line. As you can imagine DPA students are anxiously awaiting to see which photos are chosen.
