Eldridge Synogogue and Chinatown
Sunday, June 24th, 2012
11AM to 2PM
DPA Instructor Jill Enfield

Back in the 1880's, Eldridge St., between Canal and Division, and surrounding areas was known to be the largest jewish population in the world, but decades later the neighborhood evolved to become NYC's Chinatown, as it remains today.

Although a spectacular synagogue remains, and completely renovated to its original state, Eldridge Street Synagogue stands within a bustling chinese community. Your 3 hours with Jill will allow you to capture the beauty of the old world architecture of the exterior of the synagogue as well as the opulent stained glass windows inside and the golden hues of the carved benches and other wooden inlays. With the light streaming through, there will be portrait opportunities as well, whether it be silhouetted against a window or basking in light in the sanctuary, from the lobby level or the balcony above. We have been invited by the management of this historically registered destination to come and take pictures without paying the usual entrance fee.

Simultaneously along side of the remnants of the 1800's, you will find a variety of chinese themes including a Buddhist Temple, just 2 or 3 doors down and Rev. Great Monk, is as friendly as can be and has invited us to come and take pictures anytime. Thus another portrait op as well as the red and gold details of the gates and interior space will be our set.

And on the streets you will find a variety of urban details and residents in their day-to-day activities. There is long lens opportunity but you will also find that a number of the retail staff are happy to break the buzz of the day to do a bit of posing.

The day will start in front of the synagogue at 12 Eldridge St. and we can finish up over a plate of dumplings in yet another photo op, the chinese diner across the street.

Yelena Angelbeck, who attended our first shoot at Eldridge and surrounding Chinatown took these wonderful photos!
