Beginner Photo Tip: Don't be Afraid to Shoot into the Light
Photos & text by Michael Hart, Houston Instructor
The old Kodak box instructions that said to have the sun behind you should be discarded! Backlight gives definition, and you don't have Uncle Harry or Baby Mark squinting like crazy at you...

Intermediate Photo Tip: Take a Tip From the Kids!
Photos & text by Tony Schreck, Minneapolis DPA Instructor
As a parent most people use their camera to record the history and memories of their children. "Sit still! I want to take your picture." How many times did we hear that when we were kids? Now, how many times do we say it when we want that great portrait of our children? We need to take a tip from them.

Advanced Photo Tip: Using Your Flash for Fill
Photos & text by Tony Schreck, Minneapolis DPA Instructor
Here is a portrait where I've used the sun as a side light and filled in light on the subjects face with a flash to lessen shadows and brighten her eyes.
Make sure to balance the flash with the ambient sunlight to make the lighting looks natural...

DPA January Assignment Winner: Anna Loeb
Seattle DPA Instructor Ken DeJarlais recently selected Anna Loeb as our winner for DPA's January "Get Bundled Up!" Assignment.
Ken said this about Anna's photograph, Snowfall in Aspen:
"Having looked at all images submitted for this assignment, I feel this is the best representation of the spirit of the assignment 'Get Bundled Up!' ... The composition is spot on for balance with no extraneous details. Exposure for snow conditions and the direction of the light are both very good, maintaining detail in the texture of the snow."
