George Simian Beginner Photo Tip:
Kids in the Fall

Photos & text by George Simian, Los Angeles DPA Instructor

DPA Los Angeles Instructor George Simian offers some great tips when photographing youngsters in the autumn time:

"Fall is a great time to follow some kids into the woods - let them do what they want (be sure to keep the parents way back and quiet, as they'll fret over the danger to the cleanliness of the clothes, etc...) - that includes jumping into piles of leaves, throwing them around, or just plain showing them the camera!...."

Halloween House

"While walking in my neighborhood, I spotted this house brightly decorated for Halloween. I knew it would lend itself well to shooting at the Magic Hour, because of the outdoor lighted decorations..."

Chuck Place Advanced Photo Tip:
Fall Aspen By Moonlight

Photos & text by Chuck Place, Los Angeles DPA Instructor

Chuck Place, Los Angeles DPA Instructor, shares his tips on capturing the essence and colors of fall by moonlight:

"I recently spent a few days high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California photographing fall aspen trees. The bright yellow leaves always contrast beautifully with the clear blue sky and often snowy mountain peaks, but I was looking for a new approach. A friend had mentioned experimenting with moonlight exposures and how they looked rather like daylight exposures. It sounded different so I decided to give it a shot..."

Brett Whysel DPA September Assignment Winner:

Los Angeles DPA Instructor George Simian recently selected the winner for September's "The Spirit of Children" Assignment.

Congratulations to Brett Whysel, Advanced student from New York, NY, for his image "Girl on a Swing"!

"Brett accomplished a very difficult technical feat - panning a subject in motion, while capturing a believable, spontaneous emotion in his young subject! He allowed the subject full freedom of action, and simply responded to her, as opposed to dictating a cliche pose, such as 'stand there and smile at the camera'...He kept the image simple, with a clean background, with good exposure and saturation - and, as mentioned above, used a slow shutter speed, while moving his camera in sync with his subject, to keep her face relatively sharp, while motion-blurring the background. Several other photographers submitted great photos, where the kids were free to act out...an overall inspiring group of photos - I'm really impressed!"
