ADVANCED DENVER WORKSHOP AT THE LITTLETON HISTORICAL FARM MUSEUM
Russ Burden took his January 23, 2010 Advanced Class students to the Littleton Historical Farm Museum for the in the field session of this DPA workshop. The weather and light cooperated, especially given the forecast, and we were treated to a wonderful time with the local farm cat and the blacksmith who posed for us all. It was a great few hours with many highlights.
While on the shoot, Russ demonstrated how to use slow synch flash and the resulting shots of the blacksmith were powerful. We also discussed bracketing images to create HDR photographs and the advantages of getting down low or up high to create unique looks rather than simply bringing the camera up to the eye. Digital photography is so wonderful in that the results can be seen instantly and adjustments can be made on the fly. If compositions needed to be tweaked, this was shown on the spot. If flash needed to be added, Russ demonstrated the before and after of its effect. There was even a discussion regarding histograms and how to read them to get perfect exposures. The classroom time was very beneficial. Many tips were provided showing everyone how to optimize RAW images in Adobe Camera Raw, how to use the brush tool using different blend modes to darken bright spots, some great clone stamping tricks, and how to alter the mood of an image using color and exposure. The entire day filled with learning, lots of laughs and we developed new friendships. Russ teaches many classes for the DPA. Be sure to touch base with him or visit the DPA site to learn more about them.
